7:19 pm - Winter is coming
|
Each night I count the ducks who sleep in the pond behind my condo.
I'm going to miss them when they depart on their southernly voyage.

3:48 pm - Of thoughts, terrapin, & tires.
|
A turtle lives behind our condo.
The sun rises and he climbs up on a small piece of a tire that pokes above the surface of the pond - no bigger than twice its size.
As evening approaches, he slips off into the pond.
Sometimes I think I should be jealous.

2:15 pm - Call to arms
|
Avery and I checked out two places in Middletown yesterday.
The first was from the Carabetta Agency out by Randolph Road (by Tommy's Pizza). On the upside it was a townhouse, had a nice private basement, was cheap, and allowed for a propane grill to be kept. "The upside" pretty much ended there. It was real small and pretty dumpy.
Later that day, we scoped out a condo located in the sea of condo complexes off of 372 in Cromwell (technically the address is Middletown but I always considered it Cromwell). The downside of this place is that it's part of a 12-unit building (a big three story rectangle, divided into quarters), doesn't have a basement, and can't keep a grill around. However, the downside stops here.
Last year the aforementioned condo had a fire tear through it, and it is just now opening up for occupancy. What this means for us is that everything is brand spankin' new. Carpet, walls, fridge, stove, dishwasher, heating/AC unit... pristine. It's on the top floor (hoorah for no neighbors above), has a balcony overlooking a little lake/pond/swamp, has a goodly amount of trees in the vicinity, and is pretty darn big (~950 sq ft).
So... Monday moving is happening. If anyone happens to be free and willing to donate some muscles to the moving cause, that'd be spectacular. And I'll give you ice cream, hugs, or icecreamhugs.

7:36 pm - My head's nodding yes, though my legs are not following
|
Various Recent Events, in no particular order...
• Graduated from CCSU • Achieved a 3.83 GPA (Magna Cum Laude) • Awarded Mathematics Departmental Honors • Acquired my 7-12 Mathematics teacher certification • Got 1st place in CCSU's first spring mathematics competition • Secured a job for 2008-09 (and onward) at East Hampton High School* • Sold my Nissan 240SX
Still on the stack... • Purchase a new car • Find my wayward winter jacket** • Start planning lessons for the coming school year • Learn statistics, since I've only taken a single course in it ever • Finalize a place to move to with Avery in Middletown - two places pending
---
*I will be teaching two sections of upper level Algebra II, two sections of mid-level trigonometry, two sections of mid-level probability & statistics, and one section of low level Algebra I.
**Seriously - did I leave this at anyone's house this spring? It's a black wool jacket, waist length, which may or may not have the words "Kenneth Cole" or "Reaction" somewhere on the inside. Also, there may be a set of three keys in its pocket.

10:55 am - Too bad dark languages rarely survive
|
Thursday morning I lost my job.
October 30th, Video Time will be closing it's doors, ne'er to return. So technically I have thirty more days of employment, though with a strongly altered schedule. Student teaching come January means any new employment I seek would be for all of three months. Difficult and unpleasant.
On the other hand, since I was kind of the manager there and did work an awful lot, unemployment may be a possibility (thanks to one (1) Ms. Breakell for even thinking of that). The idea is intriguing, and may actually turn this whole situation into a hearty helping of awesome sauce.
More bad news time. Since student teaching is around the corner... I got a cell phone. While still not necessarily important enough, I will need to be reached by schools and wanted to have the proper number on my student teaching application. If you're the type of person who feels the need to be able to get ahold of me, shoot over an email and I'll share.

A week or two ago, I arrived home and the following was awaiting me:
Dear Jarad,
Upon careful consideration of your application for the National Science Foundation scholarship program in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics at CCSU, the program management team made a decision to grant you a scholarship in the amount of $5,200 for the 2007/08 academic year.
Teamed up with a $2,200 Federal Pell grant makes for a pretty excellent final year of schoolery.
And speaking of my final semester of classes which precedes my student teaching, next fall's schedule looks something like this:
Tuesday 2:00 - 3:15 Statistics for Secondary Teachers 4:00 - 5:40 Problem Solving III 6:45 - 8:25 Abstract Algebra
Wednesday 4:00 - 6:40 Principles of Secondary Education 6:45 - 9:25 Introduction to Geography Heh.
Thursday 2:00 - 3:15 Statistics for Secondary Teachers 6:45 - 8:25 Abstract Algebra

3:32 pm - A lone, jazzy trumpet (it's the mist!)
|
Over the past... year, I've been absolutely terrible at electronic housekeeping.
My inbox is flooded with old emails that I didn't bother to read full or archive (or sometimes respond to). My bookmarks are unsorted and cluttered. My folder of schoolwork is just a mess of different classes.
But every now and then I actually peer through the miss mess and find gold. I found a webcomic, tucked away in my bookmarks from god-knows-where.
Do you like (often times) stick figure humor about... ...M. C. Escher? ...Binary? ...Schrödinger? ...The Periodic Table? ...Selfish Trickery? ...Factoring? ...Text Adventures? ...Moral Relativity? ...Blue Sparks?
The comic is super inconsistent. A lot of the time it's some random sketches or barely humorous strips... but boy howdy did some of 'em make me laugh. Above are a couple gems, but I know I missed many more. If you've got the time, you should check 'em out.

Death. 95 Saturn SL2. 180,000 miles and 5 years of somewhat faithful service.
Life(?) 93 Nissan 240SX. 80,000 miles and a single owner (until me, that is) who truly was a sixty year old lady. Also, finally a way for me to learn how to drive standard. Piece of cake. It was all opportunity, for $4,200 which I could pretty much afford (well $3,500 was the actual price, the other $700 was for BS dealer fees and tax and registration and whatnot).
Money. The federal government decided it would be a good idea to give me a Pell grant for school this year of around $3,300. The lovely state of Connecticut decided it'd be grand to slip another $2,100 grant my way. School this year would still come to around $1,500 which wasn't terribly pleasant with my savings at an all time low. Just so happens that I was also offered a subsidized Stafford loan from the Feds (no payments til I'm graduated, and all interest accumulated whilst I am still in school is paid for).
Magic. EDIT: Hee haw.

3:05 pm - Hot to Katratzi

Ye olde Saturn died Wednesday evening in Thomaston. Alas, it was neither brakes nor exhaust but clouds of white smoke pouring out the back and an engine that has decided that the whole "running" thing was way overrated. I can't really hold that against it, as running really isn'y my cup of tea either.
My thanks to those who offered their help when the problem was just the minor matter of brakes and exhaust. I'm kinda sad that my prediction was right as far as not putting much money into the car because it was poised to die at any time. Anyhow, you can color me vehicleless for now.
---
My semester's officially over, Thursday having contained the two finals that I had to take. What really sucked is having one directly after the other, which meant that I hadexactly one hour and forty minutes to complete my exam for Calculus III. Much to my dismay, this was most certainly not enough time for me to complete it. The rest of my class, save two students, were still hard at work when I had to run to my next final (and I'm no slouch either when it comes to work speed - generally I am one of the first few finished). Nevertheless, I had to turn in a very incomplete exam which would have been significantly better had I been able to complete it (not 100%, mind you, but at least in the B range if not better).
The second final exam was in a class taught by the chair of the mathematics department (Dr. Timothy Craine). After I had completed his exam (of which I was the first to finish) I pulled him aside to ask him if there was anything that I could do, because I was concerned about my Calc exam. Normally I am not one to simply complain, but this exam counts for 35% of my final grade. Even though I had maintained a decent average throughout the semester (86, 84, 88, & 90), bombing this exam could drop my grade down to a C.
Without having transportation (meaning no chance to meet directly with the professor) he recommended that I write a "thoughtful letter" and email it to both my Calc professor and him.
( My email to Dr. Recoder Nunez & Dr. Craine )
This morning when I got home from Magestry, I was pretty floored by the response I got, which is as follows:
( Dr. Recoder Nunez's reply )
Was I way out of line? Did my initial letter sound that bad that I just came off as a pretentious pratt?
If you've actually read through all this (because this is an abnormally long entry), I would be really interested in any other opinions. Right now, I'm pretty unsettled by the whole matter.
***UPDATE*** ( Now Hear This! )
